Coach Fortune
It has probably been on everyone's mind about what is going on with the United status of our program. I just wanted to take a minute and let everyone know how this has progressed over the summer and affected our program. As the 2007/2008 starts, we will no longer be a United program. We will fall under the jurisdiction of Eisenhower Lacrosse. What does this mean for players and parents?
- We will no longer be able to have players from all Utica Schools.
- We only be able to accept players that will attend Eisenhower.
Yes, that means that all Mallow and Shelby Jr. High students that are going to attend Eisenhower will be able to play for our program. Unfortunately, students from Shelby Jr. High that will attend other Utica High Schools will not be eligible.
- All current players that participated in the 2006/2007 season, that will be attending other high schools, will be eligible to continue playing, per MHSAA ruling, these current players will be grand-fathered in. (great news)
In the off season it took a tremendous amount of work to get this to happen. Through protests, the MHSAA committee finally decided to do the right thing.
What does this mean for future players in the Utica School District? There are not many options out there, so here are some suggestions:
- There are always leagues to continue playing in throughout the fall and summer.
- To get parents involved in creating another Utica United team involving the other 3 Utica High Schools. This might be able to happen through the MHSAA.
- Starting up junior high programs for Lacrosse.
With all this said, if anyone is interested in starting up a program at any level, the Eisenhower Lacrosse program would like to help out or assist in any way. If any additional information is needed, please feel free to contact Coach Mark Fortune @ 586-291-6648.
